Here's the JPEG (sides 1 and 2), notes to follow later tonight. I didn't get to finish the This Is UAF section or add the 09-10 roster in, but you get the idea. This type of brochure is a tool coaches use to send to potential recruits.

Notes from Final Project:
1. layers - five of them: background, background images, text, logos, images
2. placing a graphic: Alaska CC, Nanooks, UAF (academic) and A_bear logos placed on logos layer.
3. drawing shape: yellow ellipse and blue/black rectangles.
4. composing text: several text boxes with various formats
5. advance formatting text: Alaska quick facts (black text box) - utilized kerning and tracking.
6. resizing/cropping a graphic: I re-sized several of the images and logos so they would fit in where I needed them to. The translucent image of the men's team running was smaller when I imported it so I had to make it bigger to fit in the light blue area and then crop out parts that didn't fit.
7. Threading text through multiple columns: I cut and paste the Individual GNAC Results from another source and had already used the text frame options to make two columns so that when I pasted it in, I just had to re-size the font and play with the kerning/tracking to make it all fit and look right.
8. Wrapping text around a graphic: I put the A_bear logo in the 2009 Outlook (above the image of the women warming up) and then used text wrap and detect edges with a small buffer to let the text flow towards but around the A.
11. Apply a gradient to an object: utilized a three-color gradient to fill the gold ellipse on the left two-thirds of the first spread.
15. Applying a color to text/object: used various blues/golds in large blue rectangle, 2009 Outlook text, and headers under 09-10 Nanooks, Alaska Coaching Staff, etc.
16. Aplying a tint to text or object: light blue box on right two-thirds of second spread is a tint and then it has an object effect applied along with the black box on the other third of that same spread.
17. Creating and applying a spot color to text/object: I created spot colors - Blue 286 and Gold 116 and then used them to make tints and
18. gradient swatches and used them in several places all over the whole document.
19. Creating and applying a Paragraph Style: created P-styles such as header and facts/info to use in Quick Facts, Alaska Coaching Staff and other such text boxes.
26. Use of transparency, including drop shadow: Used exclusion transparency on two background rectangles on second spread (which turned the far left one black and the one on the right a lighter blue shade).
30. My imagination: I liked being able to use the translucent image of the guys running behind the stats, etc. This is a template we will use for all of our other sports now. :)

Jamie's 10 (I have 11) Tips For Beginning InDesign CS4 Users:
1. Save often :)
2. Utilize the pasteboard
3. Learn the keyboard shortcuts - cuts down time and makes life easier when you can quickly change tools, undo, zoom in/out, preview your work, etc.
4. Make the most of the layers options to help organize your work - lock/unlock them, hide/make visible to help improve your productivity and limit making mistakes/changes to the entire layout
5. Right click (or option click for us Mac users) is your friend. Has a lot of useful tools in the options listed
6. Paste into - easy way to paste items (image or vector art) right into a frame and then resize and move around in the clipping path
7. Use the Application Frame - especially when going between Adobe apps (PS and AI)
8. Pre-flight - I love this upgrade from CS3; makes it so easy to know that you are missing something (font/link) or you have everything ready to package as is
9. Turn your smart guides on - I used to draw a hundred guides on some of my pieces. With smart guides I draw significantly less of my own guides
10. Organize/add to your panels and workspace as you go. This helps to increase efficiency and productivity significantly for me.
11. When working with lots of text - make the most of the paragraph and character styles. Makes it easy to make adjustments/changes

1. opened up the moon image in photoshop to get rid of the background
2. added the moon over top of the star ship image
3. rotated the star ship image to make it look like its coming from behind the moon
4. the star ship I put at 74% opacity
5. I then put the moon on Exclusion Blending mode
6. I then added some white dots (supposed to be stars) on a black background
7. on a new layer I drew some shooting stars and put the effect of Outer glow to make it more like a star
8. then I put the star graphic on a exclusion blending mode also
9. lastly I added some text, I didnt change the color but changed the blending mode to Screen to make it look almost hidden in the image

Tips
1. Use Google, when you have any questions the internet can be very helpful
2. always make changes on a different layer
3. keep a backup of your original file
4. the step undo shortcut is very useful
5. remember to save
6. experiment with different tools, it might make the document look better
7. but dont go over board with the vector shapes
8. use a mouse instead of a track pad.... it will help a lot
9. InDesign is a good large document publisher, so do be using it like photoshop (unless you have to)
10. Like stated above, the undo move is really, really, useful

First I set up the document with three columns so I could easily get the three objects lined up and spaced out. From there I drew a circle as my first object, a slightly larger square that completely encompassed the circle, and then a 25 pt star with a 75 inset. I centered all three objects upon one another and then changed the arrangement so that the circle was on top, the star was second and then the square was the furthest object back. After that I grouped and cloned them two times and lined them all up evenly in their columns and centered them vertically in the document as well. I didn't pay attention to the example that was provided and wound up filling all of the objects with green at first. I then started to work on the transparency effects of the far left group. I selected the circle and the star and applied the screen. From there I moved onto the center group and chose the same two objects. This time I applied the exclusion effect. Finally I used multiply on the last grouping. When I was done, I looked back and the sample and realized it was practically identical. So I went back and selected all three groups and began playing with the swatches and changing the color. I went through the basic ones that were provided and found that red and green were colors that provided the most visible results of the transparency effects, while yellow, blue and pink didn't provide much contrast. I didn't want to stick with green or red, so I made a spot color of a purple shade I called plum and I was pleased with the contrast it provided to the transparency effects on the objects in this assignment.

I made my third table into a sort of media roster that my office might create to distribute to radio/TV media members who cover our sporting events live and need the quick ability to quickly ID and provide the basics info for our players as they progress through a contest. For some sports, like hockey, they are more easily identified by their numbers since their faces are hidden most of the time by their helmets.

I haven't done a lot of work with images in tables, so I liked being able to add that into the traditional roster mix.

"Now paging Doctor Mertle!"

Haha...I think I've heard of this doctor before, but she had a bit more hair and an cute accent! No wait, that's Dr. Ruth!

Anyway, I began by setting up my layers (head, body and background). I used the clipping path/detect edges to cut the white background surrounding her head away. Then I chose a skin color to fill the graphic and had to do some pen/eraser and stroke/fill work to get her teeth white and lips red (also used satin effect on lips and emboss/bevel effects on her necklace). From there I worked on the body starting with her coat and arms and then adding a belt and color to clothes underneath. The green shirt is actually a rectangle that I made into a sort of trapezoid and then played with the arrangement of all of the pieces to get them in the correct order I wanted. After adding the freehand drawn skirt and boots I had a little fun with the background making a multi-colored rainbow gradient that is centralized around her adorable face. I love her smile and just the overall expression on her face...I could just see the sunshine and rainbows emitting from her face when I laid eyes on it. It's silly (like me), but I hope you like it!

I created an advertisement for our upcoming women's volleyball tournament. Normally we do a poster that coincides with the cover of our eventual program, but due to finances we cut this from our budget this year. I manage our website and figured if I created something like this I could post it there (as a splash page) as well as blast it to all of our newsletter recipients, boosters, and season ticket holders for all sports.

To begin with I set up my layers - I knew there would be at least three and wound up using four: background, images, logos/graphics, and text.

From there I developed the background layers first trying to incorporate Nanook blue and gold - including spot colors, tints and gradients - throughout the text and other objects that I created.

After I had the basic background ready, I placed the tournament logo and resized it to the top and center of the ad and dispersed the UAF and the A+bear (athletics) logos in the bottom corners. Then I started to add in the action images of the players and coaches. At first I considered cutting out the images of the players, but then I decided I wanted them to look more like a filmstrip and wound up giving them all borders and resizing them to fit together along the top and outside edges of the page.

Then I worked on getting the tournament schedule incorporated but wasn't a fan of the colors and fonts when I first got them incorporated. So I had the idea to add the three rectangles behind the text to make them stand out and used various effects and colors to help them pop off the page. I also needed to incorporate the info. on the tournament luncheon as well as some other basic information like the location and where to get more information and tickets. It was fun to play with the layers and arrange the objects so the star would sit on top of the image of Megan Thigpen but still behind the Session 1 box.

Finally, I figured out I didn't have a catchy title or much paragraph like text, so I threw in the "Point Nooks!" note. If you haven't been to a Nanook volleyball game in recent years, this phrase is said after every point the Blue and Gold score. It is lead by the announcer and the crowd repeats it. As a former player it is awesome to have the fans so involved in every point we win. Anyway, I hope you like the ad okay and if you are in Fairbanks that you will come out and watch a match this year and learn more about Point NOOKS!! :P

I went through a few different attempts to come up with something that I wanted to do or say, in the end using my dogs as the subject was perfect and it entertains my wife as well. I have done things like this before using Word or WordPerfect, but learning and applying the tools in InDesign is becoming fun. Using the bones for effect was fun, at first I drew them. I greatly enlarged the image to get a cleaner line with the mouse but I found a graphic on line that looked so much better. I had difficulty getting the bones to loop and be on top of the graphics above, but I was satisfied with the effect of the tumbling bones, colored and highlighted. I divided the page into the areas of interest, the top with the banner introduction and the pic of the dogs, the middle using the tumbling bones and more info about the event and the bottom using bones as bullets with drop caps and a graphic to add human interest. I image if I were to do this one again it might look different using text wrap in more imaginative ways.

The document size was 8.5x8.5 inches. I used a pink to black gradient background. The swirls were downloaded from an online site. The swirl with the butterflies in the upper left corner is set to normal blending mode with an opacity of 50%. The swirls behind the handle of the bell use a screen blending mode at 35% opacity. The parallel lines were warped in Photoshop using the wave style. After bringing them into InDesign I applied the overlay blending mode at 100% opacity. The black swirls are normal with 100% opacity, as is the bell. The reflection of the bell is normal at 70% opacity with gradient feathering applied. The belltree on the right has an opacity of 9%.

I had difficulty with the text. I wanted to type on a path, but couldn't make the text white. Deciding that color was more important than curved path, I went with a text frame and a pleasing font.

The basic square is the lowest layer in each group and is the original red color. The circle is the center layer, while the triangle is the top layer.

The leftmost group has the multiply blending mode applied to the circle and the screen blending mode applied to the triangle.

The center group has the overlay blending applied to the circle and the hard light blending mode applied to the triangle.

The rightmost group has the difference blending mode applied to the circle and the luminosity blending mode applied to the triangle.

This is really very simplistic since I am not an artist. I took the image into Illustrator because there I could use the pencil, and fill after I drew the clothes. I used Object>Clipping Path... to get rid of the white background.

I started out by deciding what I wanted to do with the champagne bottle graphic. First I crossed two bottles by rotating both to the angle I liked and then resizing the one in the background so it was larger than the one on top. From there I chose my spot color and began to play with the tints and gradients and play with how I could use them to enhance my flyer and the graphics/text we were asked to include. Green is my favorite color so it was an easy choice to pick one of the green swatches from the Panatone solid coated menu. I filled the image background of the bottom bottle and enlarged it so it filled the page and then put a gradient across it gives a light sort of halo effect around the top bottle. I probably could have made it a little bit more pronounced/dramatic by using only a two-color gradient, but it is close enough to what I was shooting for the first time around. From there I began to play with strokes, adding in a lines (two diamond crossing lines and the squiggle behind the bottles on the label) and toyed with the strokes and colors until I found something I liked. For the text, I always have a tough time with choosing good fonts, so I scrolled through until I landed on Minion Pro (bold italic). I changed the first letter of each word in the glyphs menu so they were a bit fancier and then used a three-tone gradient (spot green-white-30 percent spot green) to fill the text. I grouped what was on the label of the frontmost bottle and then shrunk it down two different times so that all but two of the bottles (that were too small for the grouped graphic) mimic the label of the top one.

Now, I'm ready to open a bottle of "Happy New Year" and enjoy it! :) CHEERS!

Hi everyone. Sorry I've been absent from the blog for several weeks. I'm working on getting caught up now, so I'll be posting assignments as I complete them!

This one was neat for me to get see how to use different typography features that the program offers. I already had experience with the hanging indent and the Tabs tool - we utilize it pretty heavily for stat charts and our sports conferences' rankings in game programs and media guides. I didn't know how to put a line above/below text (without drawing one in or making a table with a border/stroke) before or known about the glyphs so it was cool to learn about those things and put them to use.

Hope you are enjoying the class and learning lots. I am and I look forward to utilizing these skills on some upcoming work projects. If all goes well, hopefully I will be able to share some of them with you.

I have been rather clueless about selection tools. Today I spent some time in Lynda.com looking at selections in one special tutorial on selection for Photoshop. It was a huge help, and after seeing all the tools available there, I keep trying to find them in ID.

Things I did in this assignment were: create layers for background, head and body. I am not a freelance, draw person so decided to use some of the things I learned today in PS, and I applied it to the elliptical selection tool in ID. I made the ellipses for the body,and arms, and applied a drop show for the arms; one on the outside and an inner glow. I colored the fill of each ellipses. Today I also found out the sequence for changing fill colors. This was not really clear to me, although I suppose it should have been. One thing I wish was available in ID was filter effects.I have played with these some in PS. I know there is an easy way to move PS to ID and from ID, and have seen how to do it, but I do not remember where exactly and just wanted to get this assignment done, so I did not pursue this.

I created ellipses around Merle's neck, applied color and skewed each ellipse to appear as, maybe, a necklace. I used the direct selection tool and changed the bottom of the body ellipse to look like legs. I also grouped the body ellipses and the ones around the head.

These are the main features I used. When I discover how to go from PS to ID I will look forward to putting filter effects on things and then go back to ID.

For this assignment I used the most important tool, patience. The bottle was enlarged and rotated with strokes and color used on the labels and the foil around the mouth colored by enlarging the image to get a good tracking line. I can see where using a tracking pen and pad really is a good tool for this program. I used the circle tool, copied and enlarged and made some smaller and colored from the swatches panel trying to get a complementary group of bubbles and tried to get the image to flow so that it looked like there was movement down and across the page. The gradient in the backround was easy, but hard to get exactly what you want.

I chose the subject matter for the design based on the necessity of completing a project at work. Images in the 2009 Book of Reports are Alaska wildflowers. On each successive section divider the GPS graphic will be replaced with text to reflect the section # and content. Each of these pages will also have different wildflowers. There will be a total of 24 different flowers featured. The primary challenges were design related since I have no background in graphic design.

Working on this blog never seems to work the same way twice. I bet its just me. The formating is squirley, I used some of my old editing skills when you said not to. Often the book and class files dont match what I am asked to do. In the CIB course we were told to put the cursor at a certain place and the text didnt match and it seemed that the pre formated aspect was off: and on this assignment, setting up the tabs, the magnet in the tab panel didnt always work to align the panel with the column. I know its me, but Im trying. I love the latin, it makes me think I either need new glasses or I'm dyslectic. Do you have something in a purple punk frames.

I made a huge mistake on this document because I looked at the color chooser and yellow was so close to red, I assumed it was part of the red spectrum. I obviously do not know the color wheel. I went back and learned, after the document was done, that yellow is one of the primary color not a cousin of red. I will not make this mistake again. I do like the yellow background but this is not correct.

I also thought we needed to color the bottle esp graphic. This took me into a whole trip of PS and using the paint bucket. I am confused by this since sometimes I could get sections of the bottle to fill and other times I could not. I realize I wandered way off the path from what you wanted, but I did learn alot about layers and had fun with the text and bottles once I placed them from PS.

I used gradients, layers, text formatting, rotating, duplicating, and I can not remember

What else I was surprised to find was I had forgotten a lot of the things I learned to do in earlier lessons. I think maybe this was because I had to do them all so fast in order to get caught up; I did not have them sink in as well as one chapter a week. I know I have worked hard on every assignment. I am so glad I am caught up now.

P.S. I thought I used the paint bucket correctly. I looked in the PS PDF help manual, and what I understood was to choose the foreground or background color click on the paint bucket and then I would empty it say for on the cork cover.

1. I spent hours with “rules”. The choices of above and below are very deceptive. I clicked in the subhead, and I assumed I would get a rule above and one below this using the 2 choices in the dialog box. After working on rules intermittently most of the day, I finally realized I had to click in the 1st paragraph and return to rules and select one above a 2nd time. I watched ID essentials in lynda.com and then learned how to move the rules. This task was very confusing.
2. Tabs were also challenging. There were no tabs inserted in task 2 and 3. I finally got the columns to align looking like the sample, but I am not sure I really knew what I was doing. I am sure at all how you align more than just one line at a time. I did each line separately.
3. I did not discover how to align the decimals. I choose the leader tab, aligned on a period and nothing happened. I pressed tab but no results. Since I wanted to finish this assignment today, I just went on.
4. I have no idea why the lines are under the text where the tabs are and also why the first line of the bulletted text is underlined.

This was an interesting exercise, they all have been a challenge. I always have to read things over to get it right and this was no exception. Using the Ellipse tool and putting the type on the path was a challenge until I played around with the insertion point on the path, the insertion point never seemed to be at the "default" point. But playing around with things not quite working the way you think they are suppose to can be frustrating for a beginer, but that insertion point on the path can creat some wild text styles, look out. Here is the assignment and off we go to the next challenge.

Sylvia_ID_Assignment_6 Working With Color

The first step was to import the eps graphic into the document. I reduced the size to make the pinwheel "sparklers" and then created the dancing bottles at the bottom. I used the polygon shape tool to make the long black triangle. The gray gradient is placed on its own layer as is the red gradient. It took several tries to get the red gradient adjusted so the gray layer did not look like a box on top of the red gradient layer. I tinted the pinwheels with a shade of the red but didn't like the effect, so I place the tint as a stipe behind the bottles at the bottom. The red text is stroked with white to make it "pop" a little. I used both tracking and kerning on the text.

I used my cook book to find out about use of mater pages for this publication. All the major section divisions were the same layout. This assignment was pretty straight forward. the only problem I had was with manipulating the title to look I wanted (curvature, colors/fill and effects). I wound up using object effects to get the drop shadowed look after choosing colors for the fill and stroke in the swatches menu. I think I was confusing some of the text effects with some Photoshop elements, because I wasn't able to find all of the different options for fill that I believe exist in Photoshop. :)

Good thing I'm taking that class too this summer, so I'm sure I will answer my own question eventually!

I chose a Latin title because the body text is in Latin and I also provided the translation. The Lucinda Calligraphy font I used was not as thick as I wished so I stroked it with the same color.

After exploring the options for typing on a path I decided the Lucinda Calligraphy font did not lend itself well to any of the available offerings, so I went with the default.

Foland_ID_3: Frames

I really like this picture taken from the beach on the Kona Coast of Hawaii (Big Island). Although it might be difficult to see in the small graphic on here, it was a gorgeous sunny day at the beach. I love that in this image you can also see the snow capped peak (in the top of the O) of Mauna Loa!

Foland_ID_2: Master Pages

I chose to look through Martha Stewart Living for this assignment (and for some delicious summer barbeque recipes, I would highly recommend). In glancing through the pages that were peppered with advertisements of all sizes (1/8 page to full page and even full spread), I could decipher at least five master pages and a handful of other unique page layouts. Even though a few of the master page layouts appeared to be built off a basic master page (three column layout and title/subject at the top), certain sections utilized the columns in different fashions (e.g. with the pictures and text laid out in similar fashions for that particular set of recipes or feature article).

The section I found was the most unique for two reasons was on Fashion (four pages). The first reason doesn't have anything to do with the layout, it's just that I don't think of picking up this magazine when I want Fashion advice (no offense intended to Martha and how she dresses or anything). Apparently it is a new section of this magazine and in some quick researching, I discovered that Martha used to be a fashion model. Apparently she does know a thing or two about the industry after all - I stand corrected!

The master page design for the fashion section was fairly simple: images of the clothing featured was scattered around the middle of the page (in a aesthetically catching, tall oval-shaped manner with some items overlapping one another); it looks as though there were five columns guides set up for individual text boxes to be placed accordingly on the page nearest to each of the pictures and identify/describe the clothing featured and where it could be purchased. For the most part the text is right aligned in the text boxes and free of obstruction but in a few places it appears they text wrap the images.

This is similar to layouts I have seen in other magazines that are not strictly about fashion or a clothing catalogue (e.g. Victoria Secret or JCrew), where the images incorporate models and a studio or outdoor setting into the images and then text is partially overlaid and text wrapped in a certain portion of the image.

I tried this with longer words and the shorter the word, the better the effect. I think it is because if the word is too long the letters are narrower and less of the graphic is visible.

I reached for a magazine and found Vanity Fair, the January 09 issues with Tina Fay on the cover, so relevent for Alaska. Kate Couric gave the graduation speech at Princton, she comment that is was so very appropriate for her to be there, after all she could see New Jersey from her home.

Vanity Fair tries to be hip or chic and has different styles of master pages for each feature, there were two master pages for the table of contents and two master pages for credits: thats a lot of credits. Each main article is of a different style, each having unique title pages and the following text pages with graphics are set up with master pages, alternating back and forth with text and graphic pages.

The opening pages of advertizing are set up with master pages as well. The first four pages are by the same advertizer and are all master pages with the exception being that one is a double page but it too follows the same master page layout. The entire page is a single graphic with the same text box in lower left corner and three different text boxes in the lower right corner

The magazine I chose to analyze is "Overtones: The Official Bimonthly Journal of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers." If one looked only at one issue there are several unique pages that would not seem to be master pages. These pages recur from issue to issue and therefore must be master pages. They include pages titled: "What's Inside", "The Informant" and "Tips and Tools".

The rest of the articles are based on a master page having a background frame for color on the left. There is also a placeholder for a photo of the author of the article stacked on top of the background frame. In some cases text is applied below the photo giving a brief bio. There is a header on the left master page with the category title right justified under which appears the article title left justified.

The left master page has the text frame configured with two columns. The right master page is a mirror image of the left master page with the exception that there is no color applied in the far right background frame and there is no photo placeholder.

I am just getting caught up on this class since I was a week behind, but I went back and read everyone's introductions, and they are all great and quite entertaining. It is amazing how one is able to generate relationships with all of us being so far away.

I am an ardent mac user and also have an iphone. I enjoy hearing other people use a mac too, although I hope it is with enjoyment not too many frustrations.

A retired politician in the class, now that might make a story. I absolutely love the chickens. How long did it take to get them to line up.

Well, I have the 1st 3 chapters of the book to read, since I just got it this week and also CS4 ID. I am so excited about this class I am doing my catch-up work on a sunny day in Sitka and a new dry suit getting in the car.

Hello,

My name is Sylvia. I was born and raised in Anchorage, and now live in the house that my dad built and my folks moved into when I was two. I lived in a duplex across town for 18 years, but sold it when Mother needed more care.

I am an alumna of UAA with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Fresh out of college I began working as an Independent Factory Representative in the gift industry. My territory was the state of Alaska. I sold such things as greeting cards, stuffed toys, and custom draperies. Twenty-eight years later I was tired of traveling so I took a job as receptionist at a doctor's office in Anchorage. I am now an Administrative Assistant for a nonprofit organization. I had no idea anyone could like a job as much as I like this one--and I have never disliked any job I have ever had.

Included in my duties are putting together our annual Book of Reports and occasionally designing brochures and printed programs for meetings.

I work on a pc. I have a very nice digital camera. (I am the official photographer for our organization because nobody else wants to do it.) I have access to a scanner.

My avocation is handbell soloist. I have rung handbells for over forty years.

Master Pages

I picked a publication entitled "The Lutheran". It had about twenty master pages, with some variations. The top of the pages were mostly comprised of blocks with text describing the topics in publication for an individual page. Sometimes there was text in the right page, sometimes it was blank. Some pages were two column, but many were three. They tended to be grouped together and interspersed in various parts of the publication.

Hi all,

I've had some challenges getting on here. Notwithstanding my Macintosh computer expertise and (I think) my computer's RAM issues - Macs sometimes seem to be finicky regarding RAM. And CS 4 InDesign for some reason doesn't work well with my Macbook. But enough with such a mundane topic.

My name is Terry, I live in Juneau and have been working full time and attending UAS full-time for the past year and a half. I am older than the hills and am lacking an undergraduate degree. I'm not genius by any means, but am dedicated to securing my degree. I am (finally) a junior in class standing and expect to secure an Associates by next fall semester. I expect a degree to follow fairly soon.

I work in the renewable energy field and see great things happening in Alaska as a consequence of our global environmental and economic issues. I'm taking this class with the desire to be a better conveyor of ideas. I am a father of three children, with one fourteen year-old at home whom I hope to have attending classes with me at UAS in the fall.

I look forward to learning this topic with you.

I came to Alaska when the glaciers last receded. My father is the north star and my mother is the aurora, but you can see by the pic that my wife has given my life a southern flavor. Our pets obey well and love to ham it up for the camera. In many ways communication is a big part of what I do and I hope that this class enhances those skills. My wifes family sells cars, but I am a politician. After many years working in the construction industry I moved on to a less desirable life that pays considerably less too.

When you reach 65 and look back on your life, it is amazing all the events and adventures you have had. Here are progression of "lives" since moving to the state in 1970:

Resident of Ak. and married (same man) for 39 years, family nurse practitoner 34 years, doctor of public health in preventive care since 2005
skier, pilot (my husband said "want to buy a plane and learn to fly". I said "yes"); we flew from the Aleutians to Eagle to many places below the Books Range, beach combed from Nankek to Nelson Lagoon, circumvented lower 1/2 of Mekoryuk;
became a mom 3-1-79 (daughter), then stopped flying since we were parents; wanted to fly after my daughter graduated. My husband said "people get killed doing that"; then Paul bought me a kayak
then I went to Loma Linda University, and got a DrPH in preventive care; traveled to Guam for an internship for DrPH; got dive certified; Fiji, Palau, Thailand while at Loma Linda;
traveling to Roatan, Honduras 8/9 for photo-dive trip
volunteer at Sitka's hospice and respite organization
starting to snorkel and scuba dive in Sitka (as soon as my dry suit comes);
learning better digital and underwater photography

Hola a todos (hello everyone)! This is basically the same intro I posted to the Photoshop blog since I'm taking that class at the same time so hopefully that's okay with you Barb. :)

I'm Jamie Foland and I have been in Fairbanks since Aug. of 2000. I came up here from San Diego, California to go to school at UAF and play volleyball for the Nanooks (2000-03). After finishing up my collegiate volleyball career, I studied abroad in Guanajuato, Mexico, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Sevilla, Spain. When I got back from my travels, I finis

hed out my degree in foreign language with an emphasis in Spanish (hispanic studies). At the moment I am not using my degree but I have slowly begun working on a masters in linguistics with the intent to teach Spanish part time and coach volleyball at the high school or collegiate level. I currently volunteer as a coach with the Alaska Nanook volleyball program.

So what do I do to earn a living? Well, my experiences gained as a student-worker in the athletic department's Sports Information Office wound up developing into my current career as the Director of Media Relations (formerly titled the Sports Information Director). I work full t

ime as an athletic department administrator and am the primary liaison between our department (coaches, student-athletes and other administrators) and the media (local, regional and national). I could take up a lot of space describing all of my job duties but don't want to bore you all with the details.

I am taking this class along with Barb's Photoshop class to improve my skills with both Adobe programs which are heavily utilized in my field. Most specifically I would like to refine my skill set and learn more professional and effective means for creating graphics and buttons for our website (alaskananooks.com) that I manage on a daily basis, designing game and event programs and promotional materials for fans, family and current/prospective student-athletes/recruits, and eventually developing annual m

edia guides and brochures for all 10 of our varsity programs.

I use both Macs and PCs at home and in the office. Something exciting that has recently happened to me is that I got married in Hawaii in January and bought a house in Fairbanks with my husband in March!! We have two "kids" of the husky mix pedigree - Josie and Kaiya - who love to run and play all year round. :) Oh yeah, if you couldn't tell, I'm kind of silly and tend to joke around a lot to make myself and others laugh at/with me. I believe that life is too short and exciting to not put your hands up (eyes open or closed is up to each individual) and enjoy the ride.

A little bit about me...

I lived in Fairbanks for over 36 years and have been professionally involved in desktop publishing and graphic design since 1986, when I started my business, Letter Perfect. I love to travel. My husband, Jim (born in Fairbanks!), and I were "snow birds" for six winters, spending the darkest months of the year at Lake Chapala in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Since our children, ages 27 and 24, will not be making their homes in Alaska and have settled in the Lower 48, we decided to head south a bit more permanently. We now live on the edge of a town in the Lake Chapala area, Jocotepec, in a house we lease! I have high speed Internet service at my house, and have conducted this course from Mexico for several semesters!

Happily, my association with UAF's Center for Distance Education is ongoing, regardless of where I am. This is just one example of the opportunities the Internet has created for me. ¡Que bueno! I use my MacBook Pro, which I love, for many aspects of my life, including work, banking, personal communication, storage and editing of the many digital photos I like to take, music, entertainment DVDs, keeping up with my favorite newspapers and newscasts, maintaining my exercise program through Web sites and DVDs, and many more! I have learned first-hand that you can take most of your life with you on the road through your laptop!

The applications I most often use are InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver. My specialties over the years have been newsletters, brochures, and other office printed materials. More recently I have concentrated on developing Web design and maintenance skills, and artistic uses of Photoshop to create photo montages, composites and other types of enhanced images. I am combining these skills with my interest in paper crafts, which has been a lot of fun to explore. I do not have much experience on the Windows-based system, and so I'll depend on your expertise when technical questions arise for that platform.
